Feature Student of the Month

Meet 6-yr-old Lily Miller, who plays ukulele!  Lily’s favorite song is “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake / Trolls movie soundtrack.  She also enjoys listening and playing to artists such as Taylor Swift, Anna Kendrick, and watching all kinds of music videos. When it comes to her music lessons, Lily just simply loves the ukulele and really enjoys learning each week.  She practices all the time and picks up her uke whenever she “gets the feeling”.  When she grows up, Lily wants to keep playing the ukulele because it is challenging and fun.  When asked how music can help change the world, she says that she read somewhere: “music can change the world because it can change people” (Bono), and she believes that.

After only a couple months of lessons and consistent practice last fall, Lily boldly signed up to play and sing “Cups (When I’m Gone)” by Anna Kendrick at the Music Flow Fall Performance!  She has a great ear for rhythm and songwriting, and loves to sing while she plays which gives more meaning to her songs and helps bring all of the parts together.  Way to go Lily!

Music enhances the process of learning. The systems they nourish, which include our integrated sensory, attention, cognitive, emotional and motor capacities, are shown to be the driving forces behind all other learning. - Konrad, R.R., Empathy, Arts and Social Studies, 2000
